Video and Transcript 2: Protecting Your Career Is Easy
Protecting your career from an unexpected sickness or injury is as easy as steps one, two, and three. That is the theme of our education model. Although income protection, otherwise known as disability insurance, is a complicated insurance product, we have attempted to make it easy to learn by breaking it down to three simple steps. These steps were not chosen haphazardly. They are in accordance with resolutions presented by the AMA Resident Physician Section. I was very excited to come upon an article published in 1998 in the Journal of American Medical Association. This article contained resolutions presented by the AMA Resident Physician Section to the AMA House of Delegates. On the top of their list was a resolution on what the selection process should be for resident physicians when considering purchasing a long-term disability policy. Because our business was already adhering to this resolution, we quickly adopted it into our program and broke it down into three steps.
So let’s summarize these three steps. Step one, the preparation of education material explaining the need for coverage. It answers the question, why. Why is this insurance so important to you? Why should you consider it at this time? Why do you as a physician need a special type of policy? Step two, studying the content of disability coverage answers the question, what. What is disability insurance? What does it protect me from? What are the benefits, and what are the features? And then finally, step three, studying the availability and the affordability of coverage answers the question, how. How do I get a policy? How do I know it’s the best policy for me? How expensive is it? How do I obtain discounts, if any?
This educational model rests on three ethical platforms as well. Steps one and two follows the ethical process of educating the consumer until you are informed well enough to make your own decision. Step three follows the ethical process of a balanced comparison, where you are equally shown all your options. Step three also helps us to follow The Golden Rule. We present to you how we would wish to be presented, if we were in your position.
